Milford and Pike County have a proud history of LGBTQ+ engagement and leadership. That’s reflected in our elected officials–we’ve had an openly-gay County Commissioner and Borough Council members and prominent activist Sean Strub has served as Milford’s mayor since 2016. (See “My Friend the Mayor” documentary streaming on Amazon Prime). Of the 67 counties in Pennsylvania, rural Pike County has been either #1 or #2 with the highest concentration of same-sex households of any county in Pennsylvania (we flip back and forth with Philadelphia County).
Our county historical society’s museum features an exhibit about President Abraham Lincoln, who was believed to have been homosexual, including the famous blood-stained flag that cushioned his head moments after he was assassinated. The Marie Zimmermann House in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area is named after its former owner, who lived with her “companion” vaudeville actor Faye Allen, forbade men from entering her property and was known as an expert with a rifle.
The Dimmick Inn, one of Milford’s popular eateries, is named after its long-time 19th century proprietor, Fannie Dimmick, who famously preferred men’s clothing. Milford also is the home of the Triversity LGBTQ center, serving the upper Delaware River Valley, with a year-long schedule of activities and events, including a popular annual Pride picnic and Alternative Prom.
